Scenes

Scenes allow the user to save the current configuration of the Caret Main Window, the Viewing Windows, the Image Viewing Windows, the Identify Window, and all selections on the Display Control Dialog.  Once a scene file has been saved, Caret may be restarted in the future and selecting the scene will configure Caret's windows and overlay/underlay selections so that they are exactly the same as they were when the scene was created.

One common use for Scenes is reproducing images used in papers.  Saving a scene each time an image is captured allows the restoration of the Caret state at the time of the image capture without having to load files, configure windows, or set Display Control Settings.  The scene will take care of these tasks for you.

Scenes are also very useful with WebCaret.  If your data set is in the SuMS database, scenes allow users to easily view your data.

Once a scene has been created, DO NOT rename or delete any data files that were loaded at the time the scene was created.  In addition, DO NOT rename or delete data file columns selected at the time the scene was created.  In addition, each node data file (metric, paint, etc) must have unique names for each column.

Creating Scenes

  1. Set up Caret's Windows so that the brain models are displayed with the desired overlay/underlay selections.
  2. Save any files that have not been saved.
  3. If the Display Control Window is not displayed, press the D/C button in the Main Window's Toolbar.
  4. On the Display Control Window, set Page Selection to "Scene".
  5. Press either the Append New Scene or Insert New Scene button.  If Caret detects files that have not been saved, a message will be displayed.
  6. In the Scene Name dialog that pops up, enter a descriptive name for the scene and press the OK button.  The name of the scene created will be added to the list of available scenes.
  7. From the File Menu, select Save Data File.  Set the file type to Scene Files, enter a name for the scene file, and press the Save button to save the file.  In the future, selection of this scene will result in Caret restoring the state present at the time the scene was saved.

Viewing Scenes

  1. If the Display Control Window is not displayed, press the D/C button in the Main Window Toolbar.
  2. On the Display Control Window, set Page Selection to Scene.
  3. If there are any scenes loaded, they will be listed in the box above the Show Selected Scene button.  To display a scene, either double-click it with the mouse, or select the scene with the mouse and press the Show Selected Scene button.  It may take a minute to load all of the needed files and setup the Caret windows.

Checking Scenes

  1. Start a new caret.
  2. Load only the scene file.
  3. On the Display Control Dialog's Scene Page, press the "Check All Scenes" button.  Caret will cycle through all loaded scenes and report any problems that are found.

Helpful Hint

When loading a data set with scenes, it is not necessary to make any file selections.  Instead, on the Spec File Dialog, press the Load Scenes button.  Caret will load all scene files in the data set into Caret and automatically display the Display Control Dialog with Page Selection showing the Scene Page.  Now, just select a scene and Caret will load the required files for you.
