We will get that fixed.

At this time the answer is no. It should not be a problem to add a
rename button to the color editor. For now, you should be able to
load the color file into a text editor (such as the one on Caret's
Window menu) and change the name of the color. Make a backup copy
prior to editing the color file.

The answer is yes if you change the name of the borders. When Caret
assigns colors to borders, paint names, foci, etc., it assigns the
color that is the longest match starting with the first character of
the names. So, if you renamed your borders to "visual color ventral"
and "visual dorsal" both would receive the color "visual". If you add
a color named "visual color" it would be a better match than "visual"
for the border named "visual color ventral".

It allows one to change the paint assignment (paint name) of nodes
within the border but it restricts this assignment to only those nodes
in the column with the name specified for reassignment.

There is a tutorial for using contours (and contour cells) in Caret.
Look for the tutorial named "Caret 5.5 Tutorial - Contours and
Sections" at "http://brainmap.wustl.edu/resources/caretnew.html#Tutorials55
".
