Surface Geometry Operations Window

Perform geometry operations on a surface.

Align to Standard Orientation Page

Aligns a flat or spherical surface to standard orientation using the Central Sulcus border projection.

Surfaces

  • Reference Surface - The surface that is used to determine the dorsal and ventral tips of the Central Sulcus.
  • Central Sulcus - Name of the Central Sulcus border projection.

Surface Creation (Inflated, Spherical, etc.)

Starting with an Anatomical surface in the Main Window, create Ellipsoid, Inflated, Spherical, and/or Very Inflated surfaces.

Surface Creation

  • Create Ellipsoid Surface - If selected an Ellipsoid surface is created.
  • Create Inflated Surface - If selected an Inflated surface is created.
  • Create Spherical Surface - If selected an Spherical surface is created.
  • Create Very Inflated Surface - If selected an Very Inflated surface is created.

Options

  • Iterations Scaling - Allows additional iterations of smoothing for surfaces with large numbers of nodes. For a surface with 75,000 nodes, the default value (1.0) is sufficient. For a surface with 150,000 nodes, a value of 2.5 works well.

Surface Cutting

Use the displayed borders to cut the surface in the main window.

Surface Flattening

  • Flatten Full Hemisphere in Main Window Flattens the full hemisphere surface in the main window.

Surface Inflation and Finger Smoothing Page

Inflate the Main Window surface and smooth any fingers (topological invalid pieces of surface).

Surface

  • Anatomical Surface - Anatomical surface used for reference measurements.

Smoothing Parameters

  • Number of Cycles - Number of cycles in the process of smoothing.
  • Regular Smoothing Strength - Strength used when smoothing all nodes.
  • Regular Smoothing Iterations - Number of iterations used when smoothing all nodes.
  • Inflation Factor - Inflation factor used to inflate the surface during each cycle.
  • Finger Smoothing Threshold - A threshold used to identify "fingers".
  • Finger Smoothing Strength - Strength used when smoothing fingers.
  • Finger Smoothing Iterations - Number of iterations used when smoothing fingers.

Surface Multi-Resolution Morphing Page

Reduces distortion in a flat or spherical surface to match local shape characteristics of the anatomical surface.

Surfaces

Reference Surface - The surface that the morphed surface tries to match the shape of the triangles.

Options

  • Central Sulcus - Name of the Central Sulcus border projection. If a border projection is found with this name, it is used to align the final surface to standard orientation.
  • Delete Temporary Files - If selected, some temporary files created during the process are deleted at the conclusion of multi-resolution morphing.

Morphs (reduces distortion) in the Main Window surface using the reference surface.

Surfaces

Reference Surface - The surface that the morphed surface tries to match the shape of the triangles.

Morphing Parameters

  • Angular Force - The percentage of a node's angular force that is used to move the node. Angular force matches triangles in shape by comparing angles.
  • Linear Force - The percentage of a node's linear force that is used to move the node. Linear force matches the side of triangles in length.
  • Step Size - Percentage of the total force (linear and angular) applied when moving a node.
  • Iterations - Number of iterations of morphing.

Morphing Options

  • Show table with distortion measurements - If selected, at the conclusion of morphing, a table is displayed showing the number of crossovers, areal distortion, and linear distortion after each iteration of morphing.

Surface Smoothing Page

Smooths a surface by moving each node to some combination of its neighbors.

Smoothing Type

  • Areal Smoothing - A node is moved to the average coordinate of the node's triangle's center coordinates.

Smoothing Parameters

  • Strength - Smoothing strength.
  • Iterations - Iterations of smoothing.
  • Edges Every X Iterations - Only smooth edges on increments of this value.

Spherical Options

  • Project to Sphere Every X Iterations - If selected, the nodes are pushed back on the sphere on increments of this value.
